PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS

🚨Words Alert: Partnership, Cooperation, Trade Barriers

Why did we choose these words? 💭

The UN explains: “A successful sustainable development agenda requires partnerships between governments, the private sector and civil society. These inclusive partnerships built upon principles and values, a shared vision, and shared goals that place people and the planet at the center, are needed at the global, regional, national and local level.”

🔜 We can reach all the goals only by working closely, facilitating the spread of information and helping the developing countries in getting the objectives as soon as possible without compromising the environment, local people and businesses.

INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE

😛 We know it is Friday but time invested on learning is never lost!

3 new words: Infrastructure, Digitalization, Industry 4.0

📋 We are living in the internet era! Digital technologies are everywhere, affecting the way we live, work, travel and play: 6 hours and 37 minutes is the estimated time an average user spends online* (*Datareportal).

Pros and Cons?🤔

Digitalisation is helping improve the safety, productivity, accessibility and sustainability of energy systems around the world. But it is also raising new security and privacy risks, while disrupting markets, businesses and workers.

Do we want to use this power for or against us?

DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

🚨Words Alert🚨: Living wage, Child labour and Global Unemployment Rate.

Last quiz was about SDG 8 “Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all”.

💸Economies grow when more workers have access to jobs and when workers are more productive. It means to create job opportunities, increase wages, reduce the gender pay gap between women/men but even between different places in the world and erase child labour.

🏥The pandemic disrupted economic activities around the world and caused the worst recession since the Great Depression. In 2020, 8.8% of global working hours were lost, equivalent to 255 million full-time jobs and the global unemployment rate reached 6.5 per cent, up 1.1 percentage points from the previous year. Youth and women were especially hard hit, with employment losses of 8.7 per cent and 5.0 per cent, respectively.

SLOW FASHION

🥳GGGlossary is out with three new words!🥳

Today’s terms are related to “Slow and Sustainable Fashion”:

  • Slow Fashion
  • Transparency
  • Cradle-to-Cradle

🦥“Slow fashion” is a trendy term in a lot of retail circles but due to climate change and more consciousness about rights and fashion practices, it is becoming more than just a term…it is a real movement today! Fast Fashion, the opposite of Slow Fashion, is one of the highest polluting industries in the world: 10% of the world’s carbon emissions are from the fashion industry, 2700 liters of water are consumed to produce one cotton T-shirt and 85% of textile waste ends up in landfills.

✊🏼How can we support the Slow Fashion Movement?✊🏼

  • Let your dollar do the talking: buy from brands who support their workforce – all the way from production to the retail space;
  • Repair, reuse and buy secondhand or vintage
  • Quality over quantity: purchase pieces that are well-made and meant to be worn for years.

SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION PATTERNS

🔜Here we are with 3 new words:

  • Sustainable Consumption
  • Production Patterns
  • Circular Economy

SDG12 aims to increase net welfare gains from economic activities by reducing resource use, degradation, and pollution.

👁️How can we do that?👁️

  • Doing more with less
  • Balancing the use of natural resources to foster growth
  • Minimizing food loss and waste
  • Adopting sustainable practices

The circular economy can help us achieve this goal extending the life cycle of products!

SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES

🎉New week, new topic and…new words!

Let’s discover what we selected for you:

  • Urban Development
  • Resilient Cities
  • Urban VS Rural areas

🧐Why these words? Because they could help us to better understand how important it is to reach the SDG11 related to “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”.

World’s population is growing fast and we need to be ready and cover all the necessities that this challenge can bring. Translated: we need to rethink how our cities are built in terms of resilience and sustainability in all its forms.

😍Have you ever thought about what would be your dream city?😍

FOOD WASTE FOOD USE

🔴Ready? 🟡Steady? 🟢Go!

Three new words…here we are: Edible/Inedible, Food Derivative, Functional food.

🧐What does food mean? “Something that people and animals eat, or plants absorb, to keep them alive” Cambridge Dictionary…but in 2020, between 720 million and 811 million persons worldwide were suffering from hunger, roughly 161 million more than in 2019*. *UN

🤔When does food become “waste”? It is an interesting question to answer! “”Food becomes “waste” subjectively, and in that subjective becoming lies a world of culinary possibility. Until it is squandered, Food is food. Food changes over time — as humans do.” Tamar Adler- former professional cook

It means we should change our approach with food from a moralistic one to a practical human one that treats edible ingredients as what they are: food.

Next time you are going to cook…questioning yourself: Is that food relly “waste”? What can I do with it?

💥Don’t be scared but curious to experiment new ways to enjoy food!💥

BIODIVERSITY

🚨Words Alert🚨: Biodiversity, Terrestrial Ecosystem and Land Grabbing

Three words strongly connected to the SDG15: Life on Land!

A flourishing life on land is the foundation for our life on this planet and as you know we all can have a role in repairing the damages caused by our actions (deforestation, loss of natural habitats and land degradation).

👣Leave your (positive) footprint:

  • Clean your local parks and forests. Organise your own or join an existing clean-up event to sustain the ecosystem of your local green space.
  • Volunteer with street animal organizations or shelters: Help to sustain diversity and save lives of animal species
  • Don’t use pesticides. To protect and sustain the quality of soil, don’t use chemicals while growing plants
  • Don’t buy products tested on animals: Check the labels on the products you buy
  • Compost. Composting food scraps can reduce climate impact while also recycling nutrients
  • Reduce your use of paper. Avoid printing and substitute it with electronic devices or carriers.

OCEAN

Can you imagine a world without oceans to swim in and explore? 🌊

😱 If your answer is “definitely not”, here the words you need to keep in mind:

  • Ocean warming
  • Ocean acidification
  • Eutrophication

Oceans have a huge impact on human and planet life because they provide a home for creatures that live below water,  provide water, food and help regulate the weather and provide jobs for more than 3 billion people.

All of us need to help to protect our seas, GGG wants to suggest you 3 smart actions 👇🏽👇🏽

  • Stop using plastic bags and bottles because these are a major cause of marine pollution
  • Organize a cleanup project for rivers and oceans
  • Buy local and certified fish

FOOD AND NUTRITION

“Eating the Rainbow”, Healthy food, Vitamins and Nutrition…Do these words tell you something?🤔

😎 Here we are with 3 new important words for our GGGlossary appointment 😎

Water, carbohydrates, fat, protein, vitamins, and minerals are the key nutrients that make up a healthy, balanced diet and “eat the rainbow” means to follow the rainbow’s color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) to get a variety of important nutrients that can prevent disease.

Colors can help us make our diet funnier and healthier!

ENERGY

🔜 Ready for the three new words of the week?

Energy Access, Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy 💡

🤔 Why are these words so important?

The pandemic, inflation and the energy crisis have set back global progress on universal access to electricity and it means we need to be aware and implement all the new energy solutions (wind power, solar, hydro power, tidal and geothermal) as fast as possible, especially in the developing world where electricity access is not ensured.

It is an essential point to counter climate change, one of the biggest threats to our own survival!

WATER

Universal access to clean water and sanitation is one of the goals (SDG 6)!

Water can help us find a more sustainable path since it connects all the 17 SDGs and offers opportunities for partnership for the goals…Here some examples:

  • Clean water is a key factor in reducing poverty
  • Water is fundamental in food production
  • Strong link between water and human health
  • Fewer children sick due to dirty water means an increase in access to education
  • Water is essential to all economic activity, including energy production, job creation and industry.

We must recognise the central role of water as a catalyst for action and progress and we must understand that interconnections between actions and people are crucial to achieve the sustainable development agenda.
